Ever since she could remember Berta was the special one. Her mother read her stories she spent countless hours with her father but that was before her baby sister came. Glenna was born beautiful. Berta saw and heard all her mother’s friends and neighbors exclaiming over the little baby. And right then and there at three years old Berta decided to be different from her new sister.

Berta was tall, slim, plain and very uncooperative. She was plain because Glenna had ribbons, bows and lace and Berta didn’t want to look anything like her younger sister. Wherever Glenna went Berta went into the opposite direction. Whatever Glenna wore Berta wore the opposite.

Glenna was tall, beautiful, gracious and outgoing. Glenna was always happy and smiling never feeling the distaste and anger her older sister tried to push between them. As hard as Berta tried Glenna always answered kindly and cheerfully.

As they grew older Glenna was more and more loved. She attracted all the men, and Berta was jealous. When Glenna married at sixteen to a man Berta had liked for several months it drove the distance between them even father. By that time Berta had given up hope and decided she was going to be an old maid while beautiful Glenna had everything she could wish for. But is that what happens? Will Berta ever stop being jealous or get married

The Bluebird and the Sparrow is a really interesting book. It keeps you occupied for an hour or two but like every other book it has good and bad parts. Sometimes you want to cry and others you want to laugh your heart out. Definitely a book about jealousy and pride that sometimes makes you look at yourself and wonder if you should stop what you’re doing and start living a better life.
