The Choice, written by Lynne Ewing is the ninth book in the Daughters of the Moon series. In this series each of the books are told from the perspective of a different character. In this book it is told from the point of view of Jimena. In this series each of the five main characters has powers that separate them from others. Jimena has the power to see the future, Vanessa has the power to become invisible, Serena has the power to go into minds and read them, Catty has the power to time travel, and Tianna has the power to move things mentally. In this book they must join together to defeat the Antrox. The Antrox is a mythological reality for the daughters of the moon.
Jimena had a rough life even before putting her life at risk to save her friends. She had a different kind of friends, they were more like family. She grew up in the hood of Los Angeles. She belonged to a gang called El Nueve. She had a Puerto Rican background. Her mother died when she was young, and was left to be raised by her grandmother. Soon she found out she belonged to something greater than a gang. She was a daughter of the moon.
Jimena faces many problems most 16-year-olds don’t have to face. With her gift of premonitions, she saw her own death, and it wasn’t far away. She had never been able to stop them before. She knew it was coming. However, Jimena also faced problems that most teenagers face in their life time. She has relationship problems, with a boy named Collin, Serena’s brother. He knows of the powers they all share, and had accepted them. Payasa, a newly introduced character is an old gang enemy of Jimena’s, but hadn’t always been. Before gangs took over their lives, they had been best friends. Payasa, the last person Jimena would have turned to for help, was right by her side the whole time; she risked her life for her.
This book series is fiction but has a lot to do with mythological stories. This book makes you want to keep reading, and has very few “dull” moments. These books are definitely recommended to teenage girls. The Author has also written another series called Sons of the Dark, still in a way following the same story line. Lynne Ewing is also a screenwriter and a counselor to troubled teens. She lives in Los Angeles, California.
This book is definitely one of my favorites, and is one of 12 in an amazing series. It’s not a story that you can guess the ending to. The way Lynne Ewing tells it, from the point of view of all the characters, really gives you a strong feeling of what they were going through. It’s almost as if you where living the terrifying life of the daughters of the moon.
