Dr. Louis Creed and his wife and two kids, Ellie and Gage, move from Chicago to Maine for Dr. Creed’s new job at the university. They move into a nice house with plenty of space for their children. They also got new neighbors, the Crandalls. Judd Crandall, who later becomes a family friend, tells Louis about how animals end up getting run over because of the trucks that speed down the road, which makes Louis worry about his daughter’s cat, Church. Eventually, Judd takes the Creeds to a special spot down a path behind their house called the Pet Sematary, where they bury the dead animals. Later on, while the Creeds are on holiday, Church gets killed on the road. Judd lets them know when they get back. The Creeds decide to bury it in the Pet Sematary but go farther past it to a different burial ground. It’s called the Micmac burial ground, which had been there since before the Native Americans, and it was said that it could bring the dead back to life. Louis asks, “Has anyone ever buried a human being back there?” “Don’t even think such a thing, Louis!” Judd answers. The next day, Church comes back home and is different; it seems almost evil. But they keep Church because he’s still harmless to them. Eventually, the dangerous road takes another life, not an animal’s.
In Pet Sematary Stephen King makes you think about what would happen if people came back from the dead. Would they be the same as before? Or would they be different in a bad way? I thought this was a long book and a little slow to start but eventually becoming more fast-paced and sometimes scary. I recommend this book to Stephen King fans or people who enjoy being frightened.
