Your name is Daryl Dixon, and almost all of your family has just been murdered right in front of you by monstrous, flesh-eating zombies. While you were off hunting in the woods with your family, the zombies came and ruined everything. Now, you must go and rescue your brother Merle, the one and only person who has ever truly cared for you in your entire life. Armed with your trusted crossbow and hunting knife, and anything you can manage to scavenge, you must travel hundreds of miles, looking for supplies such as food, gas, and ammunitions along the way, to find Merle. Nothing will stop you from reaching your brother, not even the “Biters”.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a zombie apocalypse survival game that is a prequel to the popular AMC show, The Walking Dead, where you play as one of the series’ most beloved characters. To players who are not fans of The Walking Dead, the game play seems to disappoint, which is understandable if you do not watch the show. The use of firearms is limited, because ammo is scarce and firearms attract many walkers, excluding the silent crossbow.  Fans of The Walking Dead will enjoy it very much for many reasons, one of the main reasons being that you get to play as the very cool, tough redneck known as Daryl Dixon. Throughout the game, you travel from area to area taking the back roads, the streets, or the highways. The back roads consume much fuel, but offer many chances to stop and search for supplies, the streets consume less fuel than the back roads, but offer less chances to stop, and the highways consume very little fuel, but offer slim chances to stop for supplies. With each area that you stop in, you have an objective, with side goals as well, such as finding new means of transportation or survivors, who before each mission you can arm and send out to look for food, gas, or ammunition. This adds some strategy elements to the game. You may be faster than the walkers in the game, but the walkers don’t have to stop to catch their breath, leaving you at a disadvantage and making running from them a very poor choice. The gameplay is often repetitive, with similar objectives in each area, but the game is still entertaining for any fan of The Walking Dead. If you have not watched The Walking Dead before, you most likely will not enjoy the game or its game play. However, if you do enjoy the series, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a must-buy!

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct was released in the middle of March, so it should cost anywhere from twenty five to forty dollars. It is available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, although the PC version has many bugs, so it’d be more worth the cost of the game to buy it on a console. If you’re looking for a game to scare you, you may want to look elsewhere, being that the game only has some moments that may make you jump. If you enjoy The Walking Dead, or would like to know Daryl and Merle’s story before the events of the show, then buying The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a priority!
