Tommy Riordan played by Tom Hardy and Brendan Conlon played by Joel Edgerton are two brother’s in two very different situations. Tommy is a runaway marine who changed his name to his mother’s last name so he wouldn’t be found. Brendan is a physics teacher and former professional UFC fighter with a wife and two kids. One day Tommy shows up on his alcoholic’s father’s doorstep needing a place to stay. Tommy goes down to the local gym and beats a professional fighter in less than 30 seconds. This fight gets put on the internet where it later will play a key role in the movie. After beating the guy he learns about, and signs up for, a winner takes all tournament called Sparta with a $5,000,000 reward. Meanwhile his brother Brendan is going to get his house taken away and needs money fast. He also learns about the Sparta tournament and decides to sign up. After qualifying, he and 16 of the toughest men on the planet will duke it out to see who is truly the toughest man on the planet. When arriving to the tournament, Brendan tries to make peace with his angry brother but Tommy won’t forgive him for not moving away from their father to go with their now dead, sick mother. While this is all happening, a soldier sees the video of Tommy on YouTube and recognizes him from a mission where they almost died. Tommy saved them by ripping the door off a tank. After his unit and his best friend is killed in a friendly fire mission, Tommy deserted the Corps. He has made an agreement where he will be taken into custody after the tournament is over. Over the next night the two men will face good and evil in the emotional ending of the movie.

In this emotional, breathtaking movie you will be guessing throughout the whole thing. Gavin O’Connor does an excellent job in portraying good and evil in this movie with small details given throughout the movie. I rated this movie 5 out of 5 stars because I love action movies and this movie is packed full of action. If you like fighting stories but also about good and evil, then you will most likely love this movie. It has a great image and is rated PG-13.
