“Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!” is an overly cheery death sentence for Katniss Everdeen. After voluntarily taking her younger sisters, Prim’s, place, she becomes the girl tribute from District 12 that will be participating in this year’s Hunger Games, a gruesome annual reminder of the Capital’s superiority over the Districts. Now Katniss and twenty-four other tributes – one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts – must battle to the death in an arena, rigged to be absolutely treacherous. Luckily, Katniss is from a district where survival is always a constant challenge, so she knows what it takes to stay alive. However, she is matched against opponents who are far stronger than her, and soon realizes that survival is certainly not only based on experience. If Katniss wants to win, she must learn to be a fighter and make tough choices in a place where morals have to be set aside.
Brilliantly written to consume the reader from the start, Hunger Games is an extraordinary, faced-paced novel, full of danger and suspense. It is narrated in a creative way in which the reader discovers what is happening right along with the characters, cleverly weaving in the feeling of reality into a fictional story. The characters are wonderfully relatable too. Instead of understanding everything about them immediately, it is truly like getting to know each of them individually – learning more about them throughout, as they grow in their own personalities. Through these characters, deeper concepts are perceived, such as love, standing up for what you believe in, and never going down without a fight. I would recommend this book to anyone who would appreciate a thrilling tale of adventure.
