xChad and Pat Stendal and their four children, Chaddy, Russell, Sharon, and Gloria, were a regular family until they made a huge commitment by becoming missionaries in Columbia. The Stendals have helped Columbian natives and Kogi Indians, who are native to the area, since their kids were very young.

The Year is now 1982 and Columbian communist guerrillas are taking over the country slowly. The Stendals have lived in peace in Columbia for so long and have only heard rumors of the development of communism.

Each member of the Stendal family contributes in some way in their mission work. Chad and Pat’s son Russell was one of the hardest working as jungle pilot, flying Columbians to different parts of the country in his old Cessna 182 airplane.

Only a year later in August of 1983 Russell was running his usual route in his plane when shots rang out and automatic rifles were firing him at. He managed to avoid significant damage and flew to a nearby airstrip. He thought he was safe from the guerrillas but it was there he was captured and taken!

The family is now frantically looking for a way out of this nightmare. The captores as they call themselves have sent a ransom note to the family. Chad and Patty know they don’t have the money for the ransom and are desperately looking for answers. What will happen to Russell? Will he be released alive? Will the family be torn apart because of Russell’s kidnapping?

The Guerrillas Have Taken Our Son is a suspenseful read that draws you in and keeps you reading. The book makes you feel thankful of what you have and where you live. The authors do a great job of explaining their story of the kidnapping in the book. The book is set in Columbia in 1982-1983. If you like action, adventure, of mysteries you’ll like this book.  If you would like to read the story from Russell’s point of view read Rescue The Captors By Russell Stendal. I loved this book a lot and would read it again. The ending was great and overall it was a great book. If it were rated I would have given it a five out-of five stars.
