Imagine yourself traveling along the desolate Highway 50 through the endless deserts of Nevada to the destination of your vacation in your sister’s Acura with the AC blowing in your face, sweat trickling down your back, when out of the corner of your eye, you catch a speed limit sign with the rotting carcass of a dead cat bounded in rope to it. At first you don’t know whether or not to believe your own eyes, you tell yourself that it was just your imagination, as your loved one reassures you again, another sign has appeared, this time with the words “DEAD DOGS” sprayed on in a deep blood red. This sign has welcomed you to the hellish, abandoned town in the middle of nowhere know as Desperation. When you are first entering the outskirts of the town you are more than likely to be greeted by the town deputy, a psychopathic killer who kidnaps, traps people of all sorts (including a woman who had just had a recent loss, a family of 3 and once was 4, a failed writer/alcoholic, and an old man) in his holding cells. When hope is abandoned, loved ones have died, and faith is ignoring you, people of all sorts of washed up past’s combine their strength because of the persistence of a boy and push through the wrath of the evil god from another dimension know as Tak, who has all control over Desperation. When they combine their strength and work together, they achieve that in which they could never have before and faith reappears through the damned. For anyone who is already a previous fan of Stephen King or survival horror this is definitely a good read for you. This book is somewhat lengthy but the whole time I was reading it I was enjoying it. The difficulty of the book would vary upon reader but for me it was not too complex but at the same time challenging. One of the things about this book as well as many of Stephen King’s others is that it is extremely graphic. This book surprisingly made me relate to my own religion because one of the character’s continuous faith in god. There is also a movie based on the book that is pretty recent and gives you a good sense of the setting, and to my belief, not a bad movie. Plan on taking some time to read this, despite it being a little difficult. Overall, Desperation will keep your mind at a disturbing awe.

Desperation is a great book that will keep you up late at night, predicting what will happen next. Stephen King once again does an excellent job making you feel as though you are right in the action and are fighting for your life and the fate of humanity. The emotions that this book gives off is very vivid and leaves a dark, gritty and suspenseful world pictured in your head throughout. The book shifts from a first person perspective to a narrative view and lets you enjoy the action while still having a good view of what’s going on. Desperation also shows the characters personalities very well, for example you can tell that they have a conscious awareness that they are abandoned and need to work together to survive
