“May God forgive us for our reckless making of this new world.”

In a future world, our planet is no longer known as the Earth. It has a new, more fitting name: the Dark Planet. It is a near-barren wasteland that you become unhealthy in and the bases you live in have a double electric fence to keep out strange monsters. Dr. Max Harding has created a new world that orbits the Dark Planet called Atherton, a place clean and safe. There are a few problems though. In order to go, you have to get your memory erased. Also, inexplicably, the top layer of the “cake” starts sinking into the ground…

Edgar is a climber. The law says that you may not climb the cliffs that lead to the Highlands (the top layer) at all if you live in Tabletop (the middle layer). Edgar disregards these laws because he has a memory of a man that he assumes is his father telling him that there is something for him on a certain side of that cliff. Soon enough he finds a book in a small niche on the cliff. But he can’t read, no one on Tabletop can. So he realizes he must climb all the way to the Highlands to find someone who can read it to him…

This book is a great read. I find that the morals are to follow your instincts and rely on your friends. The author has great voice and it is not a hard book to read. I would recommend this book to people who wonder what the world will end up like or who just like a good adventure.
