holes3            Holes, by Louis Sachar, is a fiction novel about Stanley Yelnats, a supposed juvenile delinquent, and his ancestors, and their acquaintances. The book clearly portrays the virtues of friendship, loyalty, hope, and trust. Reaching out to all readers, this story, riddled in mystery, is fun and exciting, yet at the same time, meaningful and sad.

There happen to be three different plot lines swirling around Holes. The main protagonist of the book Holes, Stanley Yelnats, is sent to a rehabilitation camp for juvenile delinquents. Soon some strange events lead Stanley to believe that the leader of the camp, The Warden, is perhaps looking for something… Many years earlier, Stanley Yelnatses, great-great grandfather, also named Stanley, found himself in love with a pig farmer’s daughter. In order to win this beautiful woman, Stanley seeks out help from one of his closest friend. This friend gives Stanley a piglet but tells him to do something for her in return. Stanley forgets to return the favor and is cursed… This man’s son, also named Stanley, seems to make a fortune, but the curse strikes, and Kissin’ Kate, a notorious outlaw, robs the entire fortune.  Could the curse still be on Stanley Yelnats and his family?

This book is a thrilling as well as an e motional novel. The setting is mainly around Camp Green Lake, an old, dried up lake. Louis Sachar did a fabulous job winding the three plots together, making it a mystery as well an adventure.  The events Louis Sachar chooses to write about convey the characters well. Although the book jumps from plot to plot, it is simple to read and understand. This novel should be recommended to older children and teens.
