 Fat Kid Rules the World

Troy Billings, a six-foot-one kid who also weighs almost 300 pounds, is just a normal kid who wants to be like everyone else, until he meets Curt MacCrae.  Troy also lost his mom at a young age and only has a brother who is a sports kid and his dad who was a former marine.  Curt is a dirty kid with scrubby ripped clothing, but is an amazing guitar player.  Curt does something that makes Troy think twice about what he was going to do and decides it was a bad idea.  Curt says that he owes him lunch and they go to a diner down the road and discuss about each other and their names and such.  Later Curt decides he will make a band with Troy.  Troy has no musical talent whatsoever and only played drums for one year in the seventh grade band.  He tells this to Curt but he doesn’t care.  Curt made plans for Troy to get lessons from his favorite band’s drummer, the Smack Metal Puppets, and Troy accepts.  Later some things go wrong and death almost happens again.

Fat Kid Rules the World is a tale of keeping responsibility and learning to get over sad points in life.  K.L. Going does a good job of getting emotions into this story and its not just another story where the mom dies and the dad gets remarried, in fact the dad doesn’t even date anyone in this story.  I also felt that I was with Troy through the good and bad times, sometimes I felt like I was behind the drum set listening to him play. Going does a great job making you feel like you were there the whole time.

Fat Kid Rules the World is exciting, heart-pounding, and exhilarating. I recommend this book to people who like music, people who are rock-and-roll fans, and other people who are looking for a book to get out of reality.  People who are against profanity shouldn’t read this book because there are many cuss words and perverted parts.
