In most people’s lives, the one thing anyone really wants more than anything is control over their lives. The ability to do anything we want and make all the choices is extremely attractive. In The Sims 3, that’s exactly what you are able to do. With no plot whatsoever established, it’s completely up the player to make every choice and control every aspect. This game gives the ability to create a person entirely, including physical features, personality, favorites, and lifetime goals. You then just spend the rest of the game controlling their life. No requirements and no restrictions. You can launch them onto a career path, make them masters of any skill, and choose how their romantic lives will play out. Every time you pick up the controller, The Sims 3 gives you the opportunity to play God. In the end, the only real requirement throughout the entire game is to know what you would do if you were in charge.

A game that gives full power to the player can either go two ways: Interesting and engaging or bland and boring. In this case, it’s kind of both. Every time you start a new file, it’s easy to pour a few hours into playing the game and planning out how you’re going to spend this new characters life. However, after a while, you begin to realize just how difficult this can be and how time consuming this game is. While I play this game, I typically have a really good start, quit after a few days, and then pick it back up in a month or two and either continue my previous file or start a new one entirely. The game certainly isn’t bad. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. The developers obviously genuinely tried while making this game it really can be fun. It’s just for specific types of people. However, if you are the this games type of person, you’re almost certain to think it to be the perfect match for you.
