“The truth that we were about to learn was that, in fact, we weren’t tough kids at ll. We never dreamed of the kind of brutality we were about to encounter, the kind of tragedy that would destroy our lives in a single night. Our lives in the city had not prepared us for anything. Nothing could prepare us for this.”

Tom Cummins, Robin and Julie Kerry will have one of the worst nights of their lives; some, their last hours, on that night of April 1991. Each one working on starting their lives decided to look at Julie’s poem on the Chain of Rocks Bridge in Missouri, with only battery powered flashlight. Instead of having a warm, loving family reunion, 4 strangers walked along the bridge with them. Raped, robbed, and tortured was what came out of that night. Naked, Robin and Julie were pushed off the bridge; plummeting to the muddy waters, falling 90 feet. But Tom had a choice: either jump or get shot; he didn’t hesitate, his cousins needed him; or he needed them. Can these three young adults live jumping so far; landing on water that feels like cement smacking into it? But who survived, whose side was told from that horrid night, of that story of endless heartbreak?

Jeanine Cummins wrote this book on behalf of her family; telling their story of shocking betrayal. This unforgettable memoir was filled with mystery, depression, and justice. Every chapter Jeanine wrote included gruesome and surprising facts about that night and many after. This book is drastically impossible to read without shedding a tear. This is a very well written and detailed passage that I will never forget. I recommend this book to people who enjoy reading non-fiction crime stories, who doesn’t mind violent crimes and who is mature enough to read within its’ cover. Don’t underestimate people, don’t think one before you have proof of another; you could be wrong.
