Everyone at Rosewood Day High school knew their names. They were the ones girls wanted to be, and guys wanted to be with. These five best friends were inseparable and bound together be secrets. Alison Dilaurentis was extremely popular, beautiful and very cruel. She was the leader of the group and would often hold the secrets that were shared against them. There is also Aria, Emily, Spencer and Hanna. Aria Montgomery, who was once an outsider, is now popular because of becoming friends with Alison. She finds herself falling into a relationship with Ezra Fitz, her English teacher. Hanna Marin was a very self-conscious girl who would do anything to be popular. Emily Fields is the athlete of the group and the most protective of Alison. Last but certainly not least, there is Spencer Hastings. Spencer is consumed by school and extremely head strong. One summer night when the girls were having a sleepover, Alison and Spencer got into a heated argument. Alison then stormed right out of Spencer’s barn where they were supposed to be sleeping. That was the night Alison disappeared. After that night the once best friends drifted apart until three years later when all of the girls began receiving harassing text messages from someone who went be “A”. At this point the girls had changed drastically. Spencer and Emily were practically the same people just older and more mature. However, Aria found herself and after a stint in Iceland she began to feel more confidant and stylish. As for Hanna, she was the new “queen bee” or new Alison of Rosewood Day with hobbies that included hanging with the boyfriend of the week and shoplifting. When the texts start coming in, the girls begin to reunite in hopes to find out who this “A” really is. The girls begin to find out that this “A” knows more about them then they thought and is threatening to reveal their secrets. The girls must catch whoever this “A” is because it is only a matter of time before all of their secrets are revealed.
Pretty Little Liars is packed with action, suspense and drama. The book’s chapters alternate, focusing on a different character each time. The book is a fairly quick read even though some chapters drag on a little. I would recommend this book to teenage girls who enjoy books filled with drama and action. Also the television is quite different than the books so if you enjoy the show I would recommend reading the books. This book will leave you wanting to pick up the next book in the series right away. It keeps you on your toes and you never know what’s going to happen next. Unlock the mystery of who is “A”.
