“Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor” is one sentence that Katniss Everdeen will never forget. At the age of seventeen, Katniss Everdeen lived in Panem, which used to be North America until it was taken over by harsh government. In Panem, there are 13 Districts. Katniss, her no good mother, and 12 year old sister Primrose, all live in poor old dreary District 12. Everybody in District 12 is poor and starving. If it wasn’t for Katniss, her family would also be starving. She is an exceptional hunter. During a major rebellion, District 13 was destroyed and is now in ruins. Although she didn’t know it, the most challenging part of Katniss’ life was just around the corner. During what is called the reaping, a person comes from the Capitol and picks one young man and woman to represent their District in a survival competition called the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is an event created by the government to say that the Capitol is still in control and owns the Districts. It also was created for the purpose of punishing the Districts for their rebellion. During the reaping everyone is worried that they will be chosen. This year, one family that has to worry is the Everdeen family. When Primrose is picked Katniss reacts by volunteering herself to go to the games. Soon after, Katniss is shipped to the Capitol where 23 others await for the games to start. Will the odds be in Katniss’ favor? Will she survive? Read the book to find out.

The Hunger Games is very well written and easy to understand, making this a good book for ages 13 and older, since it contains very gruesome details of the killings. After every chapter, Suzanne Collins leads you into the next one, making you want to keep reading it. In this book, there is a lot of adventure and also love, suspense, humor, and family closeness. Suzanne Collins also includes foreshadowing, and imagery. Since I couldn’t put this book down, I rated the book 5 out of 5 stars. This is my favorite book of all times by far! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
