Ever since Jem was little, she saw the numbers. Everyone has one, their special number. And only Jem knew of their existence. Now 16, Jem, a high school orphan with little to no future, still sees the numbers. She still hasn’t learned to cope with them, seeing them only made her sad. Jem was lonely, her only friend herself, until one day when she meets Spider, a spastic, smelly kid who also had no future. He became what Jem never thought she’d have, a friend. But when the numbers get the best of her, causing her to narrowly escape disaster, she ends up on the run with her newfound friend, suspects to one of the biggest crimes in London history. Jem has to face the wild, the police, and worst of all: social interaction as she runs from the law and tries to cope with the numbers, the numbers that tell her the exact date of every person’s death. In this action and romance packed adventure from Rachel Ward, you will be holding onto every word like it were the last you read, because who knows, maybe it will be.

Numbers is an amazing book that deals with not only a cool fantasy plot, but also real problems that teenagers face. The story digs deep into the psychological issues that come with knowing the date of everyone’s death. The book also touches, slightly, on drug abuse and suicide. The author also goes into the fact that when in a hard time the one thing you need is sanctuary. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys a good action, fantasy, or even romance book. Rachel Ward not only tells a good story, but leaves you in suspense and wanting more right to the last page.
