“He stares at me, aghast, tears wet on his cheeks. “W-what are you talking about?”

I take a steadying breath, bracing myself against an onslaught of tears. “I mean, Lochan, how come I don’t love you anymore?”

Lochan and Maya have always felt more like friends then siblings. Together, they have stepped in for their unreliable mother, a drunk who always comes home in the middle of the night, if she decides to come home at all. They take care of their three younger siblings, the bills, the cooking and cleaning, and they also keep up with their schoolwork. Lochan is the quiet shy guy sitting in the back of the class, passing each time he’s called on by the teacher. Maya, on the other hand, is the popular girl with many friends and dating opportunities. They way they were brought up has caused them to be closer than two siblings would ordinarily be… so close that they have fallen in love. They are aware that their relationship is wrong and frowned upon in most societies, but they are powerless to how they feel. What will happen to Maya and Lochan? Will their secret be found out? What will happen to the short tempered-13-year old Kit, innocent Willa and hyper Tiffin if their secret is revealed?

Tabitha Suzuma cleverly writes this story about forbidden love. Her vocabulary in certain parts is a tad bit risky, but descriptive and strong. She explores the love of a brother and sister in ways that most would never think about. Her views of this love have changed my views. If you love someone and they love you back in the same way, why not be together? The answer to that question is most societies aren’t quite ready for new types of love, even though they say you can love who you want to love. I highly recommend this book for those who are open minded and love stories that could actually happen.
