Veralidaine Sarrasri otherwise known as Daine, loses her home and her family to bandits in her hometown of Snowsdale. Torn with grief, Daine leaves Snowsdale with the only family she has left, her shaggy grey pony, Cloud. The two travel to the fair held at the capital of the country of Galla, Cria, in search of any work to both take their minds off recent events and to earn an income to stay alive and prevent from stealing as much as possible. Daine finds a woman there by the name of Onua who is searching for an assistant to hire to take new mounts down into Corus, the capital of Tortall for the army of the Queens Riders. Daine proves herself gifted with animals throughout the journey south with Onua

As Daine and Onua are traveling to Corus, a city so grand Daine cannot help but gawk at the scenery, Daine encounters more immortals, beings that come from the divine realms that will live forever unless other powers kill it, than she has ever seen in her life. Meeting stormwings, immortals with a human torso and head with large steel wings and talons who feast on the fear and the carnage left in battles, and spidrens, immortals with human torsos and a giant spiders body and legs that stand around seven feet in height. Daine meets a black hawk with a broken wing that holds a secret and meets the only lady Knight in a century. Daine also befriends a badger god on the way to Corus who watches over her and gives her advice in the most desperate of times. With new friends and a haunted and rejected past, Daine arrives in Corus. As Onua the horse mistress for the queen’s riders, assistant, Daine earns a standing with the riders and even proves herself to be a suitable teacher for them. Learning all the ins and outs of palace life, making more new friends, including the most powerful mage in all of Tortall by the name of Numair, Alanna, the Lady Knight, her children as well as her husband the baron George Cooper of Pirates swoop, even the King, Queen, prince Roald and princess Kalasin.

One day, Daine senses a presence coming near, something unpleasant, she warns the riders of the oncoming danger of stormwings and helps to defeat them proving herself to be extraordinarily useful tool in the fight against immortals. Suspicious of the possibility that Daine might actually be gifted with magic, Numair sets out to train her in the art of Wild magic, or magic with animals. Learning all there is to know about castle life, meddling gods, and her new found magic, Daine sets off into the adventures that will fuel her through the next three books and beyond.

Wild Magic is engaging from the very beginning and one of my personal favorites out of the four books that make up the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce. Wild Magic is in fact the first book in the series and sets a very good example for the next books to follow. It is a simple book, good for light reading and is appropriate for all ages. I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and magic. It truly is a spectacular masterpiece completed by the genius that is Tamora Pierce.
