Katniss Everdeen lives in a rundown shack in district twelve with her sister and mother. Without a father who had perished in a mining accident Katniss must hunt illegally in the woods outside the district fence to keep her and her family alive. Katniss lives in the least wealthy but also least strict district in all of Panem. Panem is a country formed from North America that is ruled by a city called the capitol which has the wealthiest people. Set in the relatively distant future this book has lots of scientific advances in it. In the beginning of Panem the thirteen districts had rebelled against the capitol. The civil war ended with the nuclear obliteration of district thirteen. With the capitol back in control an event named the hunger games was created. In the hunger games 2 tributes from 12 to 18 years old from each district, one girl and one boy, are set against each other until 23 are dead and one is named victor and blessed with prizes. When prim is selected to compete in the games Katniss immediately volunteers to take her place. This is a death sentence. Only one victor is still alive from district twelve and he is a drunken slop. Katniss will be pitted against much stronger enemies, some of which have trained their whole life for this moment, but she has her bow. Years of hunting in the woods have made her an expert. Even with a bow her odds are not good. Will she survive these cruel games or become one of the victims?

This book shows that nothing good come out of giving government too much power. The hunger games are a cruel reminder. Many of the characters think or secretively say how much they despise the capitol. Laws are very strict and people are destined to be stuck in their class unless they win the games. The first person point of view helps to show how the thoughts go through Katniss’ mind. Both my sister and my mother personally recommended this book to my and I would recommend it to you. The beginning involves a lot of background information and is slow to get started but you should not drop this book. It is one of the most popular books in the school and I have noticed that is rarely available in the library. I thought it was a very cool book and I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.
