Meet Bud Caldwell, an orphaned ten-year old boy from Flint, Michigan. He is orphaned in the worst possible time to be orphaned. The days of the Great Depression. He had a great life before his Momma fell sick. She fell sick and took a turn for the worse, and passed on. Now Bud is on the lam, from his screw-loose foster parents.  He carries all of his possessions in his old, beaten up suitcase. In it he carries various items, such as a picture of his momma, a few stones she treasured, and some blue flyers, advertising “Herman E. Calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression!!!!!!” a jazz band in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Momma never told Bud who his father is, but he knows that it must have something to do with the man in the flyer. So Bud sets off for Grand Rapids, hoping to find his father. Bud is also the author of “Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner life and Making a Better Liar out of Yourself”, but you will find out more about that as you read the book.

Christopher Paul Curtis did an awesome job writing this book. His style of writing makes everything so easy to visualize. He also illustrates the tragedy of the Great Depression by making occurrences in the story of things that happened during the Great Depression. For example, he writes in his book about how Bud went to a breakfast line, which was a usual thing during the Great Depression. He also paints a good picture of how hard being an orphan was, especially in those hard times.  I would recommend this book to anyone who: reads adventure, realistic fiction, historical fiction, or anyone interested in reading about the Great Depression. Once you read this book you will easily see why I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars.
