Being a teen is difficult enough. When you add in a mysterious, unlabeled package filled with tapes containing the voice of a girl who committed suicide two weeks earlier, suddenly ready to tell her story, life goes from difficult to downright confusing. Hannah Baker died two weeks ago from a prescription drug overdose; she can’t send thirteen tapes to Clay Jensen telling all about her reasons for suicide right? Or can she? All through the night Clay listens as Hannah’s voice tells him tape by tape, person by person, the reasons for her early death, thirteen reasons to be exact. Clay’s life will change forever as step by step Hannah leads him through her thought process and closer to how Clay ties in with her untimely death. Life will change forever as Hannah talks through her last few years of life and the thirteen reasons why she couldn’t go on.

Thirteen Reasons Why is truly a life changing novel. The tale of a teenage girl battling high school, friends turned enemies, and lies, really shows what average teens go through. This story shows just how much our words and actions can affect others. Someone once said, “People won’t remember what you did, or what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel.” Thirteen Reasons Why proves just how true that quote can be. Even the simplest actions can have a drastic consequence on a person’s life. This book truly is amazing and life touching. I recommend this book, not only to teens, but to parents of teens as well. A major lesson can be learned from the content within the two-hundred and eighty-eight pages of this novel. People can be cruel and life can get tough, and this novel is the perfect example of how seldom do we realize just how far our actions can harm a person, as well as just how ignorant we can be when the signs point to our faults. Life goes on, but the ones we lose to suicide are never forgotten, I’m sure this novel will have a major affect on anyone who reads into its touching message.
