Darren Shan was just beginning to comprehend the fact that once you go vampire, you never go back. After his horrible experience at the Cirque du Freak, Darren had lost his new friend, Sam Grest, which led to him drinking Sam’s blood in order to keep his spirit alive. Luckily for Darren, who had been refusing to drink blood, this kept him alive and made him develop a taste for it.

Darren’s vampire mentor, Mr. Crepsley, had met with a friend of his, Gavner Purl, who told him to go to the city where he was born, and that something bad was happening there. Mr. Crepsley and Darren set out, along with Darren’s friend from the Cirque, Evra, to the city, for reasons unknown to all but Mr. Crepsley. When they arrive, they find out that people are being found dead, their bodies drained of blood. Mr. Crepsley knows what this means, and every night he sets out, never once mentioning to Darren or Evra what he does or where he goes.

Darren soon notices that whenever Mr. Crepsley leaves at night, more people are found dead the next day. How strange… Darren believes Mr. Crepsley is doing horrible things when he goes out, horrible things involving missing people, and a lot of blood. He then takes it upon himself to track Mr. Crepsley to his unknown whereabouts, but when he finally succeeds in locating him, he’ll be thrust into a chain of events that nobody could predict.

Tunnels of Blood is the 3rd book in the thrilling, Sci-fi horror series Cirque du Freak, and is definitely a worthy sequel to the past books. It combines elements of mystery, horror, thriller, and even a bit of romance to make an amazing read. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a thrilling novel that doesn’t take too long to read, but has the time to properly enjoy it.
