Katherine is a senior in high school when she goes to a party Sybil has thrown for New Years. She meets Michael, a guy who later in her life becomes her first love. She finds herself strongly attracted to him. As their relationship begins the issue of sex comes up, more of an emotional and health issue than a moral one. Katherine isn’t sexually active but Michael is. They have a unique relationship it’s sincere, intense and fun at the same time. Although they weren’t together all that long it’s serious and know that a new world opens up when their young passion for each other blooms. When the question of a ski trip with Michael and his sister comes up, Katherine’s parents let her go. When they get their Katherine doesn’t know how to ski but Michael teaches her and soon she begins to love it and wants to keep going. After the first day of skiing Michael and Katherine do something bold for the first time ever they go to sleep in the same bed and Katherine meets someone new. When they do have sex on Michael’s sister’s bedroom floor, they are sure it seals a love that will be “forever.” When separated for the summer by work that takes them to two different states, Katherine is aware of the limitations of their relationship and ultimately attracted to a tennis instructor, Theo, who is older and more experienced in life. She takes responsibility for breaking the news to Michael when he comes on a surprise visit, the summer she knew was over, and Katherine recognizes the loss as a stage in movement towards more satisfying relationships yet to come. I would recommend this book to any teenage girl who is looking for a look in on love. This book is a little mature for younger girls and can get very detailed. I loved this book and can’t get enough of it. People might say this book gives girls false hope but it’s what can happen in real life.
