“Well, I can’t believe a broken finger can land you in the hospital, Leah. Are you telling me everything? Are you sure those doctors know what they’re doing? I expected Indiana to be a little more progressive. Even if we are living in the boondocks.”

16 year old Leah Lewis-Hall has to fend for herself when she is diagnosed with a deadly disease and her mom and stepfather number five leave her by herself and head for Japan right before Christmas. Leah ends up breaking her finger that leads her to the hospital for further tests. After lots of testing, her doctor diagnoses Leah with bone cancer. At least she does not have to deal with the news all by herself. She has a 5 year old roommate, Rebekah, who is Amish. Leah meets Rebekah’s older brother Ethan who can barely look her in the eye and always talks weirdly. Leah does not tell him but she really likes his attitude and the way he acts for some odd reason. After a couple weeks in the hospital Leah starts hurting and twisting more things and that is when she meets someone that comes in the room every night. But, the mysterious person always talks to Rebekah and a little bit to Leah and then magically disappears. Will Leah’s cancer clear up? And who is the mysterious person that keeps appearing and reappearing?

Lurlene McDaniel does a fantastic job pulling you in. The suspension starts on the first page and ends on the last! It also introduces you to a different kind of religion, Amish, and shows you even if you look different and believe in different things you are still the same. Angels Watching Over Me, is not only about strength but also that friendship can break all the barriers of your religion and angels really do watch over us and protect us even if we do not know that the person is an angel. This book does have two other teeth clenching books that follow this one.
