Yet again, Nicholas Sparks out does himself in this novel about love and loss and how the two collide. Dear John takes place in modern day North Carolina a year or two before 9/11. John, the main character of the book, had opted out of the college option and enrolled into the military after his rebellious teenage years. After being in the military for a few years he finally got to go on leave and return to his hometown in Wilmington, North Carolina. But, once he arrived home he wasn’t quite sure what to do since he had changed so much after going into the military and did what he found most peaceful, surf. When John was the beach one day he met someone who would change his life forever, Savannah, a young college student from Lenoir, North Carolina who came to Wilmington to build homes for the less fortunate. John and Savannah have an undeniable connection and eventually fall in love. But, when 9/11 strikes choices are going to have to be made and John is going to have to decide between love and his country. John’s choice will ultimately turn his life upside down and will definitely keep the readers on the edge of their seat.

This book was wonderfully written and good book for a rainy weekend. At 330 pages this tear-jerking novel won’t let you put it down, once finished you will wish there was a sequel. There is definitely mixed reviews on this book but, if you have watched the movie you must know that it is extremely different from the book. Nicholas Sparks is New York Times #1 bestselling author and will definitely touch your heart in ways you wouldn’t think. I highly recommend this book to teenage girls and anyone who loves a good romance novel.
